Winter birds-- puffy feathers making down jackets, neck pulled in close. They become the color and life in the landscape, the bright gift in a flash. The touch of evergreen or red berry makes an irresistible image. Is it hardiness, beauty amidst or because of adversity? In the US the winter birds are changing as the weather is warmer or they are assured food sources. Some get caught in an early or late winter storm. It is surprising to see bluebirds, robins, and goldfinches in the ice and snow, but, special too. For Gay the reigning winter bird was the cardinal and she documented them beautifully.
