Gay created gardens using plants both as palette and structure. She drew the plans in winter mixing perennials and annuals for color coordination and yearly change while keeping in mind the animals and birds that would be drawn in to its features. She loved working with color, texture, mood, and art features including rocks, logs, bird houses, chairs, statues-- borrowed or built at home.
